Little blue penguin

Description

Little blue penguins (Eudyptula minor) live all around New Zealand and also occur in Australia. Thanks to fossils found near Oamaru in the South Island, we know that little blue penguins have lived in New Zealand for at least 25 thousand years.

Research connection

Dr Daniel Thomas (Massey University) is interested in studying fossil penguins, and he is producing digital copies of little blue penguin bones for research. The bones of modern animals help to identify and describe the bones of ancient animals. In particular, the shape and structure of little blue penguin bones can be useful for describing fossil penguin bones. New bones will be added here as they become available, and eventually the entire penguin will be scanned.
