Penion cuvierianus shell
The shell from a gastropod snail, Penion cuvierianus. These large snails live in the coastal waters of New Zealand, and this one was collected offshore of the Coromandel Peninsula, near the Alderman Islands.
This gastropod snail was collected by the research crew aboard the RV Kaharoa, on the 24th of January 1998, and is now part of the collections of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.
Felix Vaux is a PhD student in the Phoenix Lab at Massey University and is researching the speciation of New Zealand’s marine snails. Felix will use marine gastropods as a model system to test punctuated evolutionary hypotheses. Click here to see more gastropods that Felix is studying.
